I was already trying to be less prejudice by that time, but seeing my favorite artist have these feelings I have for girls, but for him with guys, humanized all celebrities. I really liked Ocean’s sound, and that letter he wrote really put things in perspective. I’m straight, but came from a homophobic community. To answer this with a specific moment, I think I would pick when Frank Ocean came out as something other than straight. On top of that, rappers were beginning to be my age, or around then. The racist experiences they spoke about, the attitudes in a relationship, the deaths you deal with, money issues, etc. Or better put, I was experiencing similar events to them. I was at a point in which the rappers lived a similar life as us. When I got older and decided to take rap seriously (as in, actually listen to it on my own, away from just edit for Hot 97 to play new stuff or my siblings/cousins to show me new stuff), I would listen to whole albums, read through lyrics, and a lot of stories and bars rapped came across as familiar. They came from the same parts of town as we did, and they shouted out the stores and streets we were at.
